The following Chapters make up the content of There’s a New World Coming:

  1. Advent Sunday – The Motive:
God has promised to come into our world. But, this coming is not one of judgment, but of grace, restoration and hope. As we explore Jesus’ apocalyptic words in Marks’ Gospel, and Second Isaiah’s call to proclaim God’s coming, we cannot miss the incredible truth – God’s love and grace is so strong that it drives God to meet us where we are – as human beings in a very human world – and lead us to life.
  2. Advent 2 – The Messenger:
When God acts, God always sends messengers to prepare people for the divine visitation. Both Isaiah and John the Baptiser were such messengers, and they challenge us to receive their message, prepare our hearts, and then to become messengers of God’s gracious coming in ourselves. The question is: how will we choose to respond?
  3. Advent 3 – The Message:
John the Baptiser spoke, acted, dressed and lived as a continuation of the prophets who had come before him and predicted his work. He refused to allow himself to become the focus, evading all attempts to identify him as anything other than a voice in the wilderness. For John, it was not the messenger that was important, but the message – and the Coming One to whom it pointed. What can we learn about following Christ from this humble, courageous prophet?
  4. Advent 4 – the Moment:
Finally, after all the promises and preparations, the moment arrives when God takes on human flesh and love is incarnated among us. Mary’s humble willingness to gamble on love, and her journey into a deeper understanding of love’s impact on the world offers us both an invitation and a challenge. Can we find the courage to gamble on love as she did?
  5. Christmas Day – The Manifestation:
Angels singing to outcast shepherds. A baby laid in a manger in a home where even the guest room is overflowing. A frail child come as the fulfilment of God’s promise to David of an eternal dynasty. These are the signs of God’s Reign arriving in the world. Now that Christ has come, and brought with him God’s new world, everything changes. The choice this leaves us with is whether we will release our old images of power and wealth and embrace this new order, or turn away and continue to live as if Chistmas is just a cute story.

Each Chapter includes a thematic liturgy, a guide for small group work and a week of daily devotional guidelines, so that There’s a New World Coming is not just an experience, but a journey into a different way of being that can have lasting effects for the rest of the year to come.

In addition, in order to make the worship more engaging, each week’s liturgy includes creative suggestions for response activities and meditations, and graphics to give a visual “hook” for the journey.
