THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

This Sunday is the second last of the twelve days of Christmas, and Tuesday is the great celebration of Epiphany, which leads us into the new season which follows. Both of these moments are filled with celebration and joy, as we reflect on the meaning of the Christ event, and the impact God’s grace has on our lives. The season after the Epiphany celebration helps us to understand Jesus better, as it explores how he was experienced by those who encountered him, and as it reveals how God’s glory shone out through his life. The next few weeks will invite us to experience Jesus anew, and to receive again the glory and presence of God which he made accessible to us.

When we reflect on the Gospel’s call to transformation, there is much that can leave us feeling challenged and downhearted. We are often called to face our darkness, and to sacrifice ourselves on behalf of God’s purposes of justice, peace, and love. This may, at times, leave us feeling that following Christ gives little joy and pleasure. But, in the call to celebrate we discover a strength and inspiration that empowers us for the challenging work of following Jesus. This joy is always available to us, and it reminds us that following Jesus really is the way to abundant life. But, sometimes it’s good to be reminded that joy is our strength, and that Jesus’ way is the way of celebration as much as it is the way of sacrifice.

This week we will open our hearts to God’s glory and celebrate all that God has given us in Jesus.
