Please forgive us, God;

when we forget that you are God;

when we treat you like a stubborn child;

when we claim you as our own,

and act like insiders,

like favoured members of your ‘inner circle’;

when we think we have you all figured out.

And when we foolishly fail to grasp,

that this kind of faith leads us away from the truth

of who you are.

Remind us of what the name ‘God’ means:

that your being cannot be contained;

that your knowing cannot be reduced;

that your creating and saving cannot be stopped;

and that who you are is more

than even our best words, our highest thoughts,

and our most creative imaginings

can hint at.

You are God,

You deserve our devotion and worship,

and we are humbled and awe-filled,

in your presence.

Amen.
